The Museum of the People’s Liberation of Croatia is established under the Historical Museum of Croatia, but it later becomes independent and is named the Museum of the People’s Revolution of Croatia.

The Historical Museum of Croatia and the Museum of Serbs in Croatia are dissolved. Their rights and obligations are assumed by a newly-established museum institution: the Historical Museum of Croatia.

Lelja Dobronić, Ph.D., director of the Historical Museum of Croatia, does everything in her power to obtain a building to accommodate the collections and permanent display. Despite receiving general pledges of support from the authorities, she did not succeed in her aim.

The Croatian History Museum is established as a national institution. The Museum is the successor to the Historical Museum of Croatia and the Museum of the People’s Revolution of Croatia. However, the building in the middle of Victims of Fascism Square (Trg žrtava fašizma 16), better known as the Meštrović Pavilion, is taken from the new museum.

The building of the former Zagreb Tobacco Factory is allocated to the Museum. The Museum thereby received a facility with floor space of approximately 9,500 m². About 2,000 m² have been planned for the permanent display, which is almost ten times more than the current exhibition space.

Ten years have passed since the allocation of the former Zagreb Tobacco Factory. The adaptation of this industrial heritage site into a contemporary museum hall has not begun.
